EDUCATION AMONG THE AKAMBA PEOPLE 1895-1970

This book looks at the Africa Inland Mission (AIM),a faith based evangelical mission organization in the development of education in Ukamba region of south-eastern part of Kenya from 1895-1970. Africa Inland Mission pioneered the introduction of Western form of education to the Akamba community amidst many challenges. AIM''s founder, Peter Cameroon Scott introduced education in Nzaui Mission station in 1896 before his death. Scott''s vision was to spread the gospel of Christ Jesus by establishing a chain of mission stations from the east coast of Africa to the west. He died a year later in 1896, after opening mission stations at Sakai, Kilungu and Kangundo. After his death, God raised Charles E.Hurlburt, as his successor who gave the organization a new structure and made Scott''s vision a reality in Africa. Hurlburt supported and encouraged the use of education as a strategy for evangelism in AIM from 1906 till his resignation in 1925. The Akamba people resisted this modern education in favor of their traditional methods of training; but after 1920s they changed their attitude and demanded AIM must improve their educational curriculum in Ukamba region.

Public funding reduction for higher education in Colorado, 1970 - 2010

This book chronicles the change in public funding for post secondary education in Colorado from 1970 to 2010. Colorado was ranked sixth among states in per capita funding for higher education in 1970 and declined to 48th in 2010. The study analyzed state appropriations in five broad categories of spending: K-12 primary education, health and human services, courts and criminal justice, and all remaining functions of state government. Findings demonstrate that since 1970, after adjusting for inflation, state general fund budget appropriations have increased by much greater percentages for K-12 education, health and human services, and the courts and criminal justice programs. Higher education general fund appropriations increased by 8.9% over this time period and other parts of state government actually declined. Since 1970, higher education enrollment in Colorado grew by 138%, thus, in inflation adjusted terms, state spending on higher education on a per student basis declined by 55%. In Ethiopia, pastoral nomads are estimated about to be 12 million. They predominantly live in frequent change of domicile in search of grazing lands for their livestock. Because of these and other interrelated cultural and economic factors, the nomadic people of Ethiopia are among the most educationally disadvantaged and most marginalized groups in the nation. Pastoral nomad Afars are one of the indigenous people, predominantly nomadic race, inhabited the northern half of the Great Rift Valley in Africa. Educationally, pastoral Nomad Afars appear to be a paradox from the point of view of participation in formal and non formal education system, and they regularly score at the bottom of the ladder. Influence of Education & Literacy on Cognitive Performance in Zambia

This study explored the relationship of Education and literacy to cognitive performance among adults in Zambia in order to promote consistency in using education as a predictor of cognitive performance among adults. The extent to which self-reported years of education corresponds to real acquisition of literacy skills remains largely opaque, especially in Zambia, where past access of adults to education is very unevenly distributed.A sample of 324 neurologically intact Zambian adults was collected through self-administered questionnaires and the Zambia Neurobehavioral assessment battery. Results revealed a moderate positive association between literacy and cognitive test performance however this relationship was not as strong as that of education which predicted cognitive test scores better than literacy.

The Persistence of the Iweto Marriage

A woman marrying another woman has globally been practiced. In Africa, it exists as a means of ensuring the continuity of a household in the absence of a son. This study focused on woman to woman marriage among the Akamba Christians of Kangundo District, Kenya. This form of marriage is referred to as Iweto marriage and has persisted among the Akamba contrary to Christian teaching where marriage is exclusively monogamous. The research findings revealed that several factors are responsible for the persistence of the marriage but all these factors point towards a net work of traditional beliefs and practices which influence the local social-economic sphere. It was evident that women life in Kangundo is still controlled by laid down patriarchal structures which are created, maintained and perpetuated by the society. The study concluded that Iweto is one of the preferred options available for women without sons and the society has not come to terms with other available solutions hence without a suitable substitute, resistance to change is inevitable. The study observes that a cultural practice like Iweto marriage cannot be discarded by the society without giving a suitable alternative.

Educating the Nation on a Shrinking Budget

The economic issues facing the higher education industry are becoming more relevant in a contracting national economy. The United States is underperforming in higher education and the global competitiveness and the interdependent nature of the world demand that the nation make postsecondary education more accessible to greater numbers of people than ever before. The needs of our diverse population call for an examination of the state policy interventions to increase college enrollment among low-income and minorities who are underrepresented in higher education. Diminishing budgets for postsecondary education dictate the need for greater efficiency in the use of declining resources. States need to determine the most effective and efficient policies to allocate the limited funds and revenues available to them, and provide increased access to higher education for a larger portion of the population to contribute to new innovations, attract new businesses, and compete for higher paying jobs.

Non-Formal Citizenship Education In Cape Town

In the past, non formal education in South Africa was committed to supporting the Mass Democratic Movement (MDM) in opposition to apartheid. Such non-formal political education was concerned with education for democracy, that is, preparing people for democracy. Post 1994, adult education policy has focused on vocational training, which has shifted the focus away from education for social purpose. My concern was that democracy is a process and a system that constantly needs to be nurtured. This requires citizens that know their constitutional rights and responsibilities, and how to put them into action. In view of this, I decided to enquire what kind of education exists that aims to build civil society by promoting social justice and social reconstruction in the new democracy. My research critically investigated and analysed the political education programmes in three organisations in Cape Town, South Africa. They focused on supporting the efforts of people who are unemployed (Alternative Information and Development Centre), shop stewards (Congress of South African Trade Unions) and HIV positive people (Treatment Action Campaign).

Taking Basic Education in China Forward

In the past 30 years, the inspiring progress of the basic education in China has attracted global attention, not merely for China's determination of developing national education, but for the workable strategies adopted by the Chinese government to implement the right to education as well. The achievement of expanding education to all children for minimum of nine years in China, to a certain extent, is a quantitative triumph of universal access to basic education. However, beyond the statistical victory of enrollment in schools, the increasing disparity of access to good quality education among different social groups remains the biggest challenge for China to fully meet the requirement of right to education in the international human rights treaties. This work attempts to explore the factors related to policy-making, institutional governance and legal protection, which may result in the gaps in qualitative development of the basic education in China. The purpose of the research is not only to address the current problems existing in the field of basic education, but also to explore the adoptable measures to further improve the enjoyment of the right to education in China.
