Habanabakize Schadrack The impact of limiting Seventh Day Adventist church education assistance to four children on education of other children of church employees

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2014 in the subject Theology - Didactics, Religion Pedagogy, grade: 1, , course: Educational Psychology, language: English, abstract: The Adventist education has the vision of giving Christ centered education through developing physical, mental and spiritual aspects. All SDA church employees' children had privileges to afford such education because of education assistance granted to them. After doing long literature review on factors that may affect physical, mental and spiritual growth among young people, the researcher realized that missing the means to afford Christian education and education at all hinders significantly those aspects of life. Therefore, this made him conduct the research using both qualitative and quantitative methods in collecting data about the impact the decision of ECRF since 2012 of limiting the education assistance to four children has on education of other children among the family of church employee. He distributed questionnaires among 27 employees and interviewed 3 officers and 6 children that affected by that policy before they accomplish A level. The statistical result proves the considerable impact of limiting the education assistance to four children, on education of other children. The lack of interest to the church, gaining deviated education and drop out of schools are likely definition of the impact. Therefore, it seems that the parents and the SDA church should put in consideration the education of those c...

This study explored the relationship of Education and literacy to cognitive performance among adults in Zambia in order to promote consistency in using education as a predictor of cognitive performance among adults. The extent to which self-reported years of education corresponds to real acquisition of literacy skills remains largely opaque, especially in Zambia, where past access of adults to education is very unevenly distributed.A sample of 324 neurologically intact Zambian adults was collected through self-administered questionnaires and the Zambia Neurobehavioral assessment battery. Results revealed a moderate positive association between literacy and cognitive test performance however this relationship was not as strong as that of education which predicted cognitive test scores better than literacy.

Improving college access and success among Black males has garnered tremendous attention. Many social scientists have noted that Black men account for only 4.3% of the total enrollment at 4-year postsecondary institutions in the United States, the same percentage now as in 1976. Furthermore, two thirds of Black men who start college never finish. The lack of progress among Black men in higher education has caused researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to become increasingly focused on ways to increase their access and success. Offering recommendations and strategies to help advance success among Black males, this monograph provides a comprehensive synthesis and analysis of factors that promote the access, retention, and persistence of Black men at diverse institutional types (e.g., historically Black colleges and universities, predominantly White institutions, and community colleges). It delineates institutional policies, programs, practices, and other factors that encourage the success of Black men in postsecondary education. This is the 3rd issue of the 40th volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

The idea for the study came from the students of the Alexandra School among whom there appeared to be a very high incidence of boredom. It appeared to the writer that the third and fourth form students at the school complained of boredom with alarming frequency; they were bored both at school and at home. When issues of diversity and race arise in higher education scholarship and practice, the focus is generally on Students of Color. That being said, if there are People of Color being marginalized on college campuses, there is a structural mechanism facilitating the marginalization. This monograph explores the relevance of Whiteness to the field of Higher Education. While Whiteness as a racial discourse is continually changing and defies classification, it is both real in terms of its impacts on the campus racial dynamics. Highlighting many of the contours of Whiteness in higher education, this volume explores the influence of Whiteness on interpersonal interactions, campus climate, culture, ecology, policy, and scholarship. Additionally, it explores what can be done—both individually and institutionally—to address the problem of Whiteness in higher education. Ultimately, this monograph is offered from the perspective that racial issues concern everyone, and this engages the possibility of both People of Color destabilizing Whiteness and White people becoming racial justice allies within the context of higher education institutions. This is the sixth issue of the 42nd volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education Report. Each monograph is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education issue, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Diverse nations, communities, cultures and language groups are building a single Union. "It is a Union built around the equal interchange of ideas and traditions and founded upon the mutual acceptance of people with different histories but a common future" (Commission of the European Communities, 2003:3). Since the European Union will be home to citizens from different cultural and linguistic background, it is becoming more important than ever that peoples have the skills to understand each other and to communicate with their neighbours. To achieve the goal of mutual understanding, it is, among other factors, necessary to promote effective language learning. One way of promoting language learning is the access to appropriate education at school. However, there are other ways of language learning. Advancing Democracy Through Education. U.S. Influence Abroad and Domestic Practices (PB)

A volume in Education Policy in Practice: Critical Cultural StudiesSeries Editors Bradley A. U. Levinson, and Margaret Sutton, Indiana UniversityThis book explores the diversity of American roles in education for democracy cross-culturally, both within the UnitedStates and around the world. Cross-cultural engagement in education for democracy inevitably bears the impressions of eachculture involved and the dynamics among them. Even high-priority, well-funded U.S. government programs are neithermonolithic nor deterministic in their own right, but are rather reshaped, adapted to their contexts, and appropriated by theirpartners. These partners are sometimes called "recipients", a problematic label that gives the misleading impression thatpartners are relatively passive in the overall process. The authors pay close attention to the cultures, contexts, structures, people, and processes involved in education for democracy.Woven throughout this volume's qualitative studies are the notions that contacts between powers and cultures are complexand situated, that agency matters, and that local meanings play a critical role in the dynamic exchange of peoples andideas. The authors span an array of fields that concern themselves with understanding languages, cultures, institutions, andthe broad horizon of the past that shapes the present: history, anthropology, literacy studies, policy analysis, political science, and journalism. This collection provides a rich sampling of the di...

Donkor Anthony Parental Involvement in Education in Ghana

The government of Ghana introduced a new educational reform program in 1995 entitled "Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education" (FCUBE). This initiative represented an effort to boost education, yet many Ghanaian children still do not have access to basic education. Based on the information gathered from forums and conferences of heads of schools in the country, one can conclude that the few children who attend receive inadequate parental support. This problem is particularly prevalent in the rural areas of the country. The Weija community is no exception to this phenomenon. Although education was brought to the community's doorsteps, few parents provide adequate support for their children in school. The author of this study set out to understand parental perceptions, values, and attitudes toward education at the Hope International School. Participants of the study noted that an attitude that inhibits parents from supporting their children's education emanates from their belief that one should honor the dead rather than cherish life. They noted how many people in the community ignore daily needs of people, but then go to extreme lengths to honor the dead.

Ezekiel Lesmore Gibson Life affirming ecumenism leads to koinonia for peace and justice

Life affirming ecumenism compels all people of faith to embrace koinonia, which simply means fellowship, as a way of expressing relations among humankind as initiated and sanctioned by God, the creator of the universal household. The desired fellowship that should exist between people of faith should undoubtedly lead to actions that will nourish peace and entrench a culture of peaceful coexistence among people anchored on inclusive justice for all regardless of religious persuasion, social status and political affiliation of the human person. Anything short of the foregoing expectation amounts to cosmetic or fake peace and most certainly ridicules the very essence of ecumenical relations and interactions. True ecumenical fellowship should lead to working intentionally for the cause of genuine peace that is soiled and rooted by authentic justice.

Master's Thesis from the year 2008 in the subject Pedagogy - Miscellaneous Topics, grade: A, Simon Fraser University , language: English, abstract: In a democratic country, in particular a country in the process of being democratized, high levels of civic engagement from the public are seen as necessary factors to sustain the principles and livelihood of democracy. In the meantime, education, especially higher education, plays a very significant role in promoting citizenship and civic activism. This study tries to identify the levels of civic engagement among students at the Royal University of Phnom Penh and to investigate whether higher education has any significant part in fostering civic engagement among the students. To this end, 200 senior students at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Cambodia's oldest and largest public university, were surveyed. In the questionnaire, three main categories of civic engagement were used: (a) civic activities, (b) electoral activities and (c) activities for political voice. Results indicate that the students were engaged in only a few activities, but not many others. However, based on the results, the students showed high perceptions about civic activities and high attentiveness to politics and government. What is interesting, however, is that (higher) education and family-two fundamental social institutions-seem to have no significant roles to play in building civically engaged citizens. This study focuses on the right to education in Lesotho. The extent to which this country has incorporated socio-economic rights, specifically the right to education, is explored. The mechanisms through which the said right is turned into reality; the challenges such right entails and the approach taken by the government are also looked at. As a signatory to many human rights instruments, Lesotho is charged with an obligation of realising socio-economic rights. One of the many international law obligations facing Lesotho emanates from the provisions of International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ICESCR).

Citizenship Education and Social Development in Zambia (PB)

Zambia, the butterfly-shaped, central African country has a population of about 11 million people, and as other Sub-Saharan African countries, has been trying to democratize since the early 1990s.Clearly, though, the promise of political reform did not fulfill the expectations of the public, andwith about 60 percent of the population living below the poverty line, many Zambians are no longerconfident that more open political systems can improve their lives. But the problem may not beinherent in the political process itself, and could be found more in the apparent disconnectionbetween people's needs and the way the country's affairs are run. It is with respect to these andrelated issues that this book emphasizes the crucial relationship between education and politicalparticipation, and specifically highlights citizenship education as essential for Zambia's socialdevelopment.Social development, which should comprise, inter alia, the economic, political, and cultural wellbeingof societies can be enhanced by citizenship education, which focuses on elevating people's understanding of their rights andresponsibilities vis-à -vis government institutions, structures and functions. Indeed, it is the centrality of the political component inpeople's lives, especially its relationship with public policy and public programs that should underline the important role of citizenshipeducation. In describing these issues, the book analyzes the role of the media, women's gr...

Paul Makocho Developing Effective Policies for HIV/AIDS Education practice in Sub Saharan Africa. The Case of Urban Schools of Malawi: A synergy of pupils needs, policies and practice

HIV/AIDS has been named the Sub Saharan disease. In countries that have achieved significant declines in HIV prevalence, young people have registered the biggest behavioural changes. It means they hold the keys not only to our understanding of the epidemic, but more importantly, to the efforts required to stem the tide of infections. However, the majority of young people are ignorant of how to prevent transmission, have low compliance to condom use, which is in some cases accentuated by misconceptions about HIV/AIDS transmission and have insufficient knowledge regarding transmission and avoidance behaviours. As such, consensus on feasible preventive interventions target young people, particularly those in schools. It is on this premise that the book unlocks the key pillars in effective HIV/AIDS education policies and practices. The study has drawn upon the experiences of selected Urban Schools in Malawi to explore the needs of young people in classroom, the extent to which the classroom practices respond to the needs, and the factors influencing these using questionnaires, interviews, lesson observations, and document analysis. Malawi typically represents most Sub Saharan African countries in terms of challenges faced by education systems. Given the similar cultural settings of the people of Sub Saharan Africa, the findings and recommendations of the study generalises to the education systems of Sub Saharan Africa to a greater extent. The book shows the need for open discussio...

Educational Reform in Europe. History, Culture, and Ideology

Education is a contested terrain. The symmetry of education reform among the seven countriesexamined in this volume is remarkable. There is much commonality in the issues they raise, inthe competing groups battling over education policy, their policy choices, and theimplementation of such policies. Also, all seven countries address the same issues: equity, global competition, the performance of their students. Nonetheless, differences are subtle andsignificant. There are at least six important traits characterizing these battles: the context, the combatants, theissues, the process, student performance and the policies. To begin with, history, culture, andgovernance regime set the context for education policy and reform. Second, there is the processof how these battles are waged--is compromise an outcome or is it a zero sum contest? Third, there appear to be four groups of combatants each with its own ideology representing a particularsocial class in society and their views about education and its uses: Conservatives, Socialists, Neo-Liberals, and Elites. Education is animportant and valued resource that each status group tries to control and shape to its own views. Fourth, there are key issues that driveeducation reform: how education can best flatten a social system, how education trains students for work, and how education socializesstudents to be functioning citizens. In recent years, a fifth issue has emerged: student performance on international standardized tests. Not only ...

Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2006 im Fachbereich BWL - Allgemeines, Note: 1,7, Technische Universität Dresden, 11 Quellen im Literaturverzeichnis, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: In recent decades a change took place in Germany: more and more women started studying. This change is still continuing. Thereby until the 1960s only 24 per cent of all students were female. The positive trend is among other things supported by the "Bologna Process".The increase of the last decades concerning women who study will proceed in future. There are several reasons to mention. The disproportionate part of women attending higher education - in 2003 55 per cent of the high-school graduates were female - represents the significant change. In some federal states like Brandenburg or Thuringia the share of women is even 60 per cent. Therefore the amount of young people who start studying has almost quadrupled since 1960. This great leap from 8,5 per cent to 42,5 per cent can not be stated with the same proportion among men. Their fraction only rose from 12,5 per cent to 36,5 per cent. With the conversion of the „Bologna Process" a dynamic sampling of the German higher education system takes place. Now it is possible for women, as it is also mentioned in the survey „Frauen im Studium", to study fast, but also practice-orientated. It is important to improve the current access situation into the German higher education system, especially in the range of professional education. Furthermore th...

Student Locus of Control, Self-Efficacy, and Mathematics Anxiety were the specific individual student affective factors that were examined in the study. Educational backgrounds of the students were examined as an attempt to explain the differences in mathematics performance at the higher education level. To achieve this, high school teacher characteristics and instructional practices in influencing students' affective factors were examined. All of the analyses presented were performed on data collected for the study from two institutions of higher education in Cameroon for the student participants and from high school mathematics teachers of the English-Speaking and the French-Speaking subsystems of education. The results of the study show that student internal locus of control, high mathematics self-efficacy, and Mathematics Anxiety were associated with performance in mathematics at the higher education level. Benefits individuals and nation get from wildlife conservation and losses local people surrounding wildlife protected areas incurred due to crop raiding done by wild animals are real. Local people are crucial stakeholders in conservation who guarantee prevalence of recorded successes of conservation in Western Serengeti Ecosystem. Necessity to address their justifiable negative perception on wildlife conservation measures to their livelihood is inevitable. Increased population of local people & wild animals, poor land use plan, lack of awareness of local people on responsibility of conservationist and government in controlling crop raiding promote the problem. More research on movements and requirements of problem animals e.g. elephants which make them to raid crops is needed; however, raising of awareness to local people & conservationists on what legally and morally should be done to control the problem require instant application. This requires changes in the content of education offered to conservationists; formal and informal education offered to local people. Content of Education for Sustainability can play a great role in raising the required awareness to combat the problem.

From earliest times, people have speculated about what happens when they and their loved ones die. Their views vary from certainty about life after death to utter disbelief. Today, many continue to believe in the survival of consciousness after physical death with some claiming actual experiences of the departed and contact with them of some kind. In an era which we think of as the enlightened era of science, education and widespread secularism, many people report contact with dead. In a survey at the end of the 20th century, 31% of people in the USA , reperted they had felt that they had been in contact with some one who had died (Greeley 1975), and in Europe the number was 25% (Haraldsson and Houtkooper 1991). Scientist, Erlendur Haraldsson, a native of Iceland, sought an answer to his question, "Have you ever been aware of the presence of a deceased person?" In the modern and educated society of Iceland, one of the Scandinavian countries; he conducted an extensive survey. During the following years, detailed personal interviews were conducted with over 450 people who responded with a yes to questions about personal experiences of the deceased while in a waking state. These accounts form the basis for this book. The results are fascinating and make compelling reading.

A clear roadmap for the new territory of education Education in the U.S. has been under fire for quite some time, and for good reason. The numbers alone tell a very disconcerting story: according to various polls, 70% of teachers are disengaged. Add to that the fact that the United States ranks last among industrialized nations for college graduation levels, and it's evident there's a huge problem that needs to be addressed. Yet the current education system and its school buildings—with teachers standing in front of classrooms and lecturing to students—have gone largely unchanged since the 19th century. Humanizing the Education Machine tackles this tough issue head-on. It describes how the education system has become ineffective by not adapting to fit students' needs, learning styles, perspectives, and lives at home. This book explains how schools can evolve to engage students and involve parents. It serves to spread hope for reform and equip parents, educators, administrators, and communities to: Analyze the pitfalls of the current U.S. education system Intelligently argue the need to reform the current landscape of education Work to make a difference in the public education system Be an informed advocate for your child or local school system If you're a concerned parent or professional looking for a trusted resource on the need for education reform, look no further than Humanizing the Education Machine. This illuminating resource provides the information you need to become a full partner in the new human-centered learning revolution.

Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.
