A review of existing literature on the field of entrepreneurship to date suggests that most academic literature on the subject is largely concerned with economic, financial, and psychosocial preconditions for entrepreneurship. Little attention is given to explaining the practical processes and actions by which an entrepreneurial business is developed. Providing a new perspective to existing literature, this case study presents a functionalist approach to examining and explaining how organisational and business practices are undertaken in the entrepreneurial firm, The Last Bag. The study examines, from an ANT perspective, how the entrepreneur navigates around the pitfalls that threaten the survival of a small entrepreneurial firm. It suggests that the success of an entrepreneurial firm is ultimately dependent on alliance formations and and an actor's ability to 'interest' other actors into an 'actor-world'. The case study is potentially of interest to scholars in the fields of entrepreneurship or business development - and really anyone who is dedicated to exploring ANT. Although much as has been written on the subject of motivation, an attempt to uncover written literatures on motivation within the context of university support staff may appear a difficult task. This piece of work which is mainly the outcome of a review of relevant literatures and lessons gained from my experience while serving as a university staff in an African context starts by identifying who support staff in an institution of higher learning are and the reasons why they should be motivated. Informed by different motivational theories, it identifies management's catalytic role in support staff motivation which could result in a rise in work performance and subsequent progress of the university. Furthermore, this publication argues that support staff performance appraisal can be a useful tool to ascertain the effect of institutionalized motivational schemes on work performance. It concludes by maintaining that human motivation is complex as evident by variances in human needs, tastes and preferences. Therefore, an attempt to motivate university support staff may require an adequate need assessment of individual support staff. Get a copy of this book and find out more!!!

Over here is need of an organization being entrepreneurial. The recent emergence of complex products consisting of, mechanical, electronic components, and software, not to mention interface to other IT products has given rise to many questions regarding the traditional idea of using the technological S-curve. First of all, many of the new products, such as computers and cellular phones are in effect complex technological systems of many technologies each with individual life cycles. It seems as if the individual technologies and the complex products of which the technologies are a part need not develop according to the same logic. In the case of cellular phones, it certainly seems as if it is not the end-users that drive development of new generations of cellular phones. The book highlights various researches done in the area.

This book is an early attempt to investigate entrepreneurial practices of second-generation family entrepreneurs in Hong Kong and Mainland China. A group of management scholars have marshalled theoretical and empirical evidence to support their proposition that entrepreneurial practices of family entrepreneurs in Diaspora and Mainland Chinese societies are due mainly to the influence of Confucianism. Based on the Weberian premise that culture can enhance levels of entrepreneurial activity and reinforce entrepreneurial practices, the culturist perspective maintains that entrepreneurial practices of family entrepreneurs can be interpreted as a fixed essentialised cultural phenomenon. This book provides evidence against the culturist perspective that Chinese family entrepreneurs are passive recipients of traditional cultural values as fundamental changes in entrepreneurial practices have been found. Therefore, the extant culturist perspective should be refined and reinterpreted judiciously. The research findings shed some light on the understanding of Chinese entrepreneurial practices, and are useful to scholars and professionals in the field of family business.

Motivational theories and models help teachers understand the different factors that have an influence on the achievement behavior. Research studies on the dynamics of learning motivation in high school classes, but also in academic classes, are presented within this book. The situated motivation theory, which requires attention to individuals in context, became a frame of reference for the investigations made in classroom settings. A common aspect of these research studies is the design and implementation of a teaching approach, inspired by the philosophy and methodology of an educational program - Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking (RWCT). The research results pointed out the importance of promoting a student-centered instructional approach, as well as the differences in the learning experience caused by such an approach, in terms of motivation.

The last twenty years have seen an awakening of interest in Kant''s theory of rational agency. Despite the immediate post-Kantian idealists'' profound interest in and contributions to the development of this area of Kant''s philosophy, there has yet to be any commensurate rise of interest in them. This book takes an important step in the direction by providing an overview of a major idealist who has long been recognized in the Continent for his rigorous work on freedom, will and agency. The first three chapters orientate the reader by clarifying the place of Fichte''s account of our capacity to act in the empirical world in its larger historical and systematic context. The last three chapters offer a critical examination of his account of human motivation in terms of drives, and action in terms of freedom, willing and efficacious acting. Besides adumbrating the full range of Fichte''s complexities and subtleties as a philosopher of action and suggesting how his unique transcendental approach might address traditional problems pertaining to agency, this interpretation provides a good departure-point for contemporary readers, teachers and scholars of German idealism to develop their own.

Understanding Tourist Motivations: Emirati Leisure Travel to Australia

Tourist motivation has become an important concept for study amongst academic researchers and tourism marketers. It embodies an amalgam of ideas and approaches, constituting what Cohen (1974, p. 528) refers to as a “fuzzy set” of definitions and descriptions. Besides other interrelated influences, it is a critical variable and driving force behind tourist behaviour (Crompton, 1979). To further understand the importance of the tourist motivation concept this study aimed to explore “how well do tourist motivation models using push and pull factors describe the motivation of tourists?” The target sample selected was Emiratis of Arab/Islamic origin from the United Arab Emirates who travelled to Australia for holiday purposes. De Ruyter and Scholl (1998, p. 8) point out that “a qualitative methodology provides an in-depth insight; it is flexible, small-scale and exploratory, and the results obtained are concrete, real-life and full of ideas”. Since Emirati society is very close-knit and conservative, a qualitative approach was taken as it allowed the researcher to get close to the participants and thereby gain a more detailed understanding of their motivation and tourist experience.

The Chinese construction industry plays a vital role in the nation''s economic growth and state owned enterprises (SOEs) play an important role in this industry. These enterprises are currently faced with a shortage of key management and technical staff. This book is based on research that explores the relationship between the retention of key staff and a range of motivation factors. It also explores the unique Chinese cultural factors that impact work and motivation. Results of an extensive survey indicate that the two most important motivation factors are fair treatment and opportunities for learning and development. Some motivation factors appear to be particularly important in the retention of employees in lower-level positions and with many years of work experience while a different set of motivation factors contribute to the retention of employees in higher-level positions and fewer years of work experience. These findings are important for ensuring that government-run construction enterprises are successful in tailoring retention strategies to different types of employees and contribute to knowledge on retention in the Chinese cultural context.

Fostering Students' Intrinsic Motivation

The lack of enthusiasm and underachievement demonstrated by more and more students in the classroom is due to a multitude of problems; among these is an underlying lack of motivation (Henderlong & Lepper, 2002). This research paper focuses on intrinsic motivation. Intrinsic motivation has been linked to a student’s success, diligence, and effort (Dicinto et al., 2004). This type of motivation is long lasting; consequently, a skill that transcends beyond school. As future educators it is our responsibility to educate the whole student, preparing them for life beyond the classroom. Therefore, developing strategies that foster intrinsic motivation in our students is important for their success. The purpose of this research is to best understand how a teacher can foster intrinsic motivation in students. Two semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore the understanding and practical strategies of cultivating intrinsic motivation. Findings showed that creating a classroom founded on relationships, empowerment, choice, interests, and technology promotes the development of this attribute.
