Leisure as Transformation

This book examines the ways in which individuals, communities, and nations can create the future. Core strategies and concepts are offered that provide a dynamic platform to bring about a needed focus on the ways in which change can be addressed. This second edition of Leisure as Transformation presents updated facts, figures, and data and provides new insights into key elements of this process. Transformation requires leadership and an understanding of the methods and procedures that can be used to bring about change. Many concepts have been introduced in the literature, but all have had the same fundamental goal: how to help individuals, communities, and nations cope with a more dynamically challenging environment that is socially, culturally, and economically turbulent. Leisure as Transformation will assist individuals who are passionate about finding ways to make leisure service delivery more effective and efficient.

Leisure Matters: The State & Future of Leisure Studies

This book updates and expands Jackson and Burtons "Mapping the Past, Charting the Future" (1989) and "Leisure Studies: Prospects for the Twenty-First Century" (1999). The need to do so was driven by the significant new developments in the leisure studies field as well as the arrival of new and upcoming experts in specific areas of study. The book features new sections on: Disciplinary Perspectives (including chapters on anthropology, history, philosophy, psychology, sociology, biology, and economics of leisure); Cognate Area Perspectives (including chapters on leisure, health, and physical activity; leisure and religion/spirituality; sport as leisure; and tourism); International Perspectives (including chapters on leisure in Africa, Australia and New Zealand, East Asia, Europe, Latin America); Diverse Perspectives (including chapters on leisure in terms of youth, family, older adults, immigrants, racial and ethnic groups, the LGBQ community; and people with disabilities). Other book chapters focus on leisure theory; leisure, time, and technology; leisure needs, motivations, and constraints; leisure, place, and social capital; leisure planning, marketing, and management; leisure research methods; and the future of the leisure studies field. Approximately 80% of each chapter summarises the current state of that specific leisure concept, topic, or area, while the remaining 20% dares to speculate imaginatively about where it could (and should) proceed in the future. Both summary and speculation are limited to approximately 6,000 words, as chapter authors were instructed to heed French philosopher Blaise Pascals (1656) oft-cited apology that I have only made this letter longer because I have not had the time to make it shorter. While the book maintains the spirit and rigour of Jackson and Burtons earlier books, it also reflects the growth and maturity that has subsequently occurred in the leisure studies field.

The Development Of Leisure And Life Satisfaction Scale For Outpatient

The purpose of this study was to develop a scale with foundational concepts involving leisure satisfaction, life satisfaction, and quality of life to assist administrative planners to create the optimal outpatient leisure and rehabilitation programs. Questionnaires were administered through a convenience sample of 174 outpatients with a response rate of 163 (93.6%) completing the questionnaire. The data were analyzed by scale purification and exploratory factor analysis processes. The results revealed that 32 items were identified with a reliability of .91. The factor structure was interpreted by six dimensionality structures (F1 life satisfaction, 10 items,F2 satisfaction with living environment, 6 items, F3 leisure and education, 5 items, F4 leisure activity and social interaction, 5 items, and F6 transportation and work quality, 3 items). For individuals to achieve a high level of quality of life, the role of leisure cannot be denied. The findings associated with the new scale design and pilot study have expanded our knowledge and given useful information on the development of the new scale.

Designing a healthy housing environment

This dissertation concerns general relations between an urban housing environment and the residents' health and good frame of mind and the issue of the evaluation of the quality of a housing environment in the sphere of these interrelations. There are two groups of elements of interest: natural and structural/spatial elements which strongly influence the quality of a housing environment and its evaluation. The starting point was the recognition of the superior role of the health factor in shaping a housing environment. The first block of dissertation concerns the issue of the relations between man and a housing environment and the residents' expectations with reference to their housing environment. The second block is devoted to an attempt to formulate the concept of a healthy housing environment with natural elements, a functional and spatial structure and a social interior. The third block tries to formulate basic laws, methods and activities which aim at achieving the desired equilibrium between needs, a programme and space in order to gain a healthy housing environment, its evaluation and acceptance. The fourth part includes the general conlusions.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Architecture and built environment clearly co-exist in terms of interaction, interdependency and mutual borrowing. Today, alongside the traditional task of designing architecture, understanding the complexity of the built environment remains a challenge for architects and planners. This book studies decentralization, wholeness and the relations of dominance in form and space, and a specific theoretical framework is created to approach the inherent underlying order of the built environment. Three case studies based on different built environments are used to demonstrate the potential of the analytical and interpretational method proposed in the specific framework, and to create operative links with the urban design process. The findings confirm the applicability of the framework and contribute greater knowledge of the built environment. This greater understanding reveals a constant relation between endogenous and external models, and some suggestions for their coexistence are discussed.

THE Effect of Poverty on the Environment

The linkage between poverty and the environment has attracted considerable attention in modern research. The World Development Report on poverty (World Bank, 1990) recognizes that poverty is an important determinant and effect of environmental degradation. The environment provides basic necessities such as water, fuel, food material and other resources useful for man’s survival. A review of government working documents show that poverty links have not been clearly established and emphasized. Policy makers and analysts have separately addressed poverty and environmental degradation nevertheless the two concepts reinforce one another. The thrust of the current research work is focused on enriching our understanding of how poor people depend on, interact with and utilize their local environment for survival and how degraded environment may subsequently lead to the exacerbation of poverty .

The workforce that produces and sells those products and services have an environmental background which also influences their performance, but this has been marginally scrutinised, particularly in developing economies. A close analysis of the workforce's environment, particularly the cultural environment, shows that they are so much a product of the environment that it is important for management to contextualise their practices to suit the particular environment. Knowledge of the cultural traits that are considered to be very important by the workforce, and why they are that important, may inform management on practices that are culturally acceptable and hence motivational.

Ken Roberts explains how and why this has happened, what it means for tourism, sport, the arts and broadcasting, and why events, in particular mega-events, have become prize acquisitions. The Business of Leisure addresses the trend towards commercialisation in the provision of leisure that has not only continued but accelerated since the 2004 publication of The Leisure Industries. This updated second edition reflects how recent developments such as the age of austerity, demographic changes and the rise of digital information technologies have transformed the leisure sector. At the same time, the book demonstrates how voluntary associations and public providers have been able to withstand the ever-growing pressures from big business and commerce. This thought-provoking text provides both a historical overview and an up-to-date introduction to the contemporary study of leisure. It is an invaluable resource for students in areas such as Leisure Studies and Management, Sports Studies, Tourism and Events Management, as well as those on Management, Business and Sociology courses.

Twelve men in an early phase of treatment (Phase 2) and eight men further advanced in the treatment program (Phases 3 and 4) were recruited to participate, and completed data collection. . Participants in this study reported leisure typologies in the following order of popularity, social leisure activities (64%); time-out leisure (30%); and achievement leisure (6%) of the time. Data inferred a significant relationship existed between the treatment phase and reports of positive and negative experience (X2= 6.038; df= 2; p = .049). As expected, participation in social and achievement leisure activities produced the highest number of positive experiences and time out leisure activities provided the fewest reports of positive experiences. The data demonstrated a significant relationship existed between the treatment phase and experience valence (X2 = 7.875; df = 1; p =.005), where those who advanced further in treatment phases reported more positive and enjoyable leisure experiences.

The book, Media, Environmental Sustainability and National Development in Nigeria takes a look at the interface between the mass media and the environment in the process of national development. Quite often many take part in practices that hurt the environment to the extent that human survival is impaired. Such practices include unrestrained felling of trees which leads to deforestation; and unregulated hunting to the extent that many animals have become extinct. Many ecological problems have resulted with erosion washing off top soil which imperils agricultural development. The destruction of the flora and fauna is also an important challenge. The nine-chapter book addresses such issues as State of the Environment, Global Warming, Assault on the Environment, Some Ecological Disaster Zones and efforts made to Reclaim the Environment, among others. Since the mass media are channels of information to the populace, the book emphasizes the role of the mass media in drawing attention to healthy environment practices while discouraging negative human activities that depreciate the quality of the environment and endanger the survival of present and future generations of the human race.

Environmental Science

Environment is the sum of all factors and forces that affect life of all the organisms. All the organisms depend upon the environment to sustain their life. The activities of organisms affect their surroundings in many ways, which in turn may affect the organisms themselves. Thus, there is an intimate relationship between organisms and their environment. A careful observation of the environment would reveal a close interaction between the organisms and the environment they inhabit. A healthy environment is essential to satisfy the organism’s basic necessities, such as food, shelter, water, oxygen, the optimum temperature. One way to deal with this situation is by providing knowledge about environment. This book “Environmental Science” is based on general knowledge and aspects of environment. I have tried my best to make this book timely and have included important and necessary aspects. This book may also be useful to people in interested field and teachers.

Leisure Spaces

Leisure is most basically defined as “the time free from work”. The ancient conception and forms of leisure were quite different from the modern ones, which came into discussion during the industrial era. The Roman society was highly stratified and comprised of diverse social classes for which leisure acquired different forms and meanings. Every stratum of the Roman society enjoyed the possibilities and pleasures of leisure proportional to its hierarchy in the social system, so that leisure can be investigated in both public and private contexts in the Roman world. This study aims to investigate “leisure”, which was one of the main driving social forces in the Roman society, in spatial terms with reference to Roman domestic architecture. The study focuses on central Italy and particularly on Ephesus, the latter of which is a good example to discuss how the Roman conception of leisure was spatially materialized in a provincial private setting since a group of well studied, documented, and published houses constitute an appropriate comparative sample and context in Ephesus.

It is widely recognized that it will be difficult to make meaningful progress towards making Nakuru City a habitable environment without documenting the current ecological status of Nakuru, environmental challenges, spirited efforts to make Nakuru a good place to live and do business. Even if MCN, NEMA, research institutions and other relevant lead agencies; play a pivotal role and perhaps bear the greatest responsibility for finding solutions, they cannot alone solve the environmental problems and challenges of the current situation in Nakuru Municipality alone. The involvement of wide range of stakeholders on environmental management in Nakuru is the only prerequisite for sustainable growth and development in Nakuru Town. Every person within the jurisdiction of the Council is entitled to clean and healthy environment and has the duty to safeguard and enhance the environment. The Nakuru Environment document issues in Nakuru that pose a challenging in sustainable development and growth of Nakuru city. The Healthy Workplace:

This book aims to explore the many components of a working environment that should be considered when developing a healthy workplace. The definition of a healthy workplace is expressed in terms of the organization's practices in providing an internal working environment that supports, protects and promotes the health and well-being of employees while concomitantly pursuing its business goals. To test this definition, the working environment was contextualized as the culture, social climate and leadership and the influence of this environment was examined. The results indicate that each of the variables are significant predictors of organizational bond and organizational health practices. More importantly, however, is the differential impact of these variables on the workplace when viewed through a comprehensive model. Overall, this book speaks to the need for contextualizing the workplace before initiating organizational improvement or development.

The Status of Environmental and Christian Stewardship

Despite the fact that the Bible as the inspired Word of God deals primarily with the relationship between God and humankind and the way to salvation and eternal life, the Bible also presents tenets that entreat the protection of the natural and biophysical world. Consequently, since the environment is a foremost aspect of God’s creation it is appropriate to establish the Biblical perspective on creation as a whole and Christians’ subsequent position and duty to creation. Humankind has been ecologically irresponsible. Greed, inadequate knowledge and negligence have led to exploitation, degradation, and disregard for the natural environment. Unfortunately, there appears to be a “deep silence” within the Christian Church worldwide as well as in South Africa on believers’ role and duty towards the natural created environment. God’s redemptive care applies not only to people, but also to the whole of creation. Believers have a duty of care in relation to God’s creation in totality – both humanity and the natural environment. There is a great need for Christian discussion on and improvement in the appropriate use and protection of the environment.
