Postharvest Handling of Tropical Fruits:Practices and Processes

Banana and papaya are important fruit crops grown in the tropics. Despite their importance, higher ambient temperature and poor postharvest handling practices makes their shelf life limited. Postharvest loss of banana and papaya in developing countries varies from 20-80% and 40-100%, respectively, depending on the cultivar and environmental conditions. To extend the shelf life and thus ensure their availability through-out the year, a study was conducted on banana and papaya. The treatments included storage in different packaging materials such as micro perforated polypropylene bags (MPB), Micro perforated polypropylene bags with ethylene absorbent (MPB+K), macro perforated polypropylene bags coated with anti-mist coating (PP), fruit waxing, gibberellic acid (GA3) and indole butyric acid (IBA) applications. Comparison was made against untreated fruits. This book, therefore, provides study findings of the different methods used to extend the shelf life. The study identified alternative postharvest handling practices in a manner suitable for use in tropical environmental conditions where poor storage and distribution facilities exist

Apricot is a popular and economically important fruit of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), Pakistan. Approx. 60 varieties are grown in the region. It has a distinct position in the economy of GB and more than 20% of agricultural income of the farming communities comes from the marketing of dried apricots within the country and abroad. Perishable nature and lack of postharvest technologies does not allow growers to fetch their fresh produce to the distant markets and resultantly they are unable to harvest the market potential. Primitive forms of farming and handling prevail in the region and huge postharvest losses are born by the growers that exceed more than 40% of annual fresh produce. Fruit producing potential of the region demands a more concentrated approach towards postharvest management technologies of fruits to fetch reasonable returns to the poor communities. This book focuses on the compositional attributes of the most common apricot varieties of GB and evaluates the impact of some postharvest treatments. This information is useful for the growers, entrepreneurs and researchers to control postharvest losses and enhance economic activity.

The primary objective of this work was to determine the physiological occurrences during the life of the fruit on and off the tree and to improve harvesting and postharvest handling practices. The work began with determining the reproductive characteristics followed by determining the fruits’ physicochemical characteristics during maturation, ripening and senescence on the tree. The effort was continued with determining the effect of selected postharvest handling practices to increase oil extraction yield, followed by determination of harvesting indicators and finally a study on ripening treatments for harvested mature green jatropha fruits.This study demonstrated that poor harvesting is not the major reason for not commercializing this non-edible biodiesel feedstock.

Postharvest Pathological Deterioration of Sweetpotatoes

Six pathogenic fungi, Botryodiplodia theobromae, Rhizopus oryzae, Rhizopus stolonifer, Fusarium oxysporum, Macrophomina phaseolina and Ceratocystis fimbriata, were associated with postharvest deterioration of sweetpotatoes (Ipomoea batatas L.) in Kenya. The first three were found to be the most important causal agents. Vine removal before harvesting and delayed harvesting predisposed roots to postharvest infection. Significant differences were found in sweetpotato cultivars in their susceptibility to postharvest spoilage. Both soil pH and washing roots, soon after harvesting, did not significantly influence postharvest spoilage. Solar curing showed potential for prolonging the storage life of the roots. Similarly, storing roots at moderate temperatures below ambient tropical conditions is likely to reduce spoilage of roots during storage. Preharvest and postharvest factors need to be considered in the development of strategies to reduce postharvest pathological deterioration of sweetpotato roots.

Controlling Postharvest Decay in High Value Fruits and Vegetables

The present study aimed at finding non-chemical and harmless ways for controlling postharvest decay of vegetables and fruits, particularly in high value crops, which are exported in marine containers, such as orange, strawberries, grapes, and tomatoes. The postharvest decay leads to a reduction in exports of these horticultural crops and may cause rejection of a lot of cargoes after export generating substantial economic losses. Using of reactive oxygen species such as ozone, as well as the use of some volatile aromatic plant essential oils were the main subjects of the current study. The study included the impact of these materials on the postharvest fungal pathogens in vitro, and on artificially-inoculated fruits of previously mentioned crops.

An investigation was conducted for obtaining information on the reduction of postharvest losses, pattern of physical, biochemical and mineral content changes, storability as well as shelf life of postharvest mango. The trials included four different experiments involving two factors where variety was a factor comprising of Langra and Khirshapat. These varieties were treated with different postharvest treatments viz., control, paraffin coating, perforated polyethylene cover, unperforated polyethylene cover, hot water (55±1)0C, low temperature in refrigerator (4±1)0C; different doses of Maleic hydrazide, GA3 and Bavistin DF solution. These experiments were laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replicates. Different postharvest treatments subjected to the investigation demonstrated significant variation in most of the physicochemical properties and shelf life of mango. Low temperature in refrigerator was the best inhibitor of ethylene synthesis that delayed ripening and prolonged shelf life. The second suitable method was found to be 400 ppm of GA3 which is cost effective and might easily be adopted by common farmers for mango preservation.

Studies On Postharvest Pathogens Of Citrus

Post harvest diseases and losses of citrus were studied in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, India. It was ranged from 14.73 to 34.96 per cent with the highest at wholesalers (3.7-5.67 %) level, followed by the retailers (5.24-11.99%), field level (4.29- 5.67 %), and at the consumer (1.50- 1.67%). Eight fungi viz,. Geotrichum candidum, Pestalotiopsis sp., Fusarium sp., Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Aspergillus sp., Rhizopus sp., Bahusakala olivacea nigra, Botrytis cinerea and two bacteria: Xanthomonas sp. and Pseudomonas sp. were identified as postharvest pathogens on mandarins, sweet oranges and acid limes and the symptoms produced on these fruits are characterized. Biocontrol agents viz., Fusarium sp., Pestalotiopsis sp., Trichoderma viride and Cladosporium viride were isolated from healthy leaves and fruits. T. viride and Fusarium sp. were found effective in inhibiting the growth of most of the postharvest pathogens, in vitro and in vivo condition.

Postharvest losses of surplus seasonal fruits are a major problem in Fiji as well as other Pacific Islands. Most of the tropical fruits in the Pacific are seasonal, therefore they are limited in supply. When these fruits are in season, they are readily available but due to postharvest losses, there is alot of wastage of these surplus fruits. In the Pacific, there are very limited investigations conducted on the postharvest losses and preservation techniques of fruits. This book provides an insight into the use of solar dryers to minimize postharvest losses in pineapple and papaya and it also looks at the changes in the quality parameters of these solar dried fruits. Solar drying is a sustainable alternative to promote food security through food preservation. The findings should be useful in studying the quality parameters of some of the other seasonal Pacific fruits and is particulary useful to the scientific community and the food industry.

Flowers give immense pleasure to everyone but lasts for few days. Roses are number one cut flower in global flower trade. Green house grown cut roses fetch better price in the market due to better quality. Postharvest life of flowers is considered as one of the factor contributing to the quality. Therefore, an attempt has been made to increase the post harvest life and keeping quality of cut roses by using different techniques like holding, pulsing and storage. To increase the vaselife cut roses were harvested and subjected to different chemical treatments like BA, 8-HQC, AgNO3, STS, Sucrose alone or in combinations. Simultaneously, the flowers were pulsed in the chemical preservatives containing higher amount of sugars and biocides for 12 and 24 hours. Further, these pulsed flowers were cold stored either wet or dry conditions at 2o C for different durations to evaluate their performance after storage. After pulsing and storage these cut rose were evaluated for physical parameters like change in weight, solution uptake, vaselife, appearance; biochemical parameters like reducing and non reducing sugars& proteins and microbial growth in the left over vase solution.

Pesticides-free bananas are grown by small-scale farmers in the Philippines without agricultural pesticides during production and postharvest phases. Fruit are marketed abroad and demand in domestic market is increasing, as well. This book showcased the non-chemical approaches of managing crown rot disease and maintaining the overall quality of pesticides-free banana fruit. These are the application of biocontrol agents using native epiphytic Trichoderma harzianum DGA02 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens DGA14 isolated from the banana fruit surfaces, application of generally regarded as safe (GRAS) compounds such as salts and organic acids, and hot water treatments. The detailed protocol, mechanisms of action, efficacy, and limitations of use of the technologies in managing crown rot disease are elucidated. Jamun (Syzygium cumini Skeels) is an important minor fruit is an evergreen tropical tree in the flowering plant family Myrtaceae. Syzygium cumini is native to Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Indonesia. The fruits develop by May or June and resemble large berries. The fruit is oblong, ovoid, starts green and turns pink to shining crimson black as it matures. The fruit has a combination of sweet, mildly sour and astringent flavour and tends to colour the tongue purple. The pulp of the fruit, extracts from the bark and seeds is of great benefit when it comes to lowering of blood glucose level. The Shelf life of the fruits is very less (2-3days) limiting its use as a fresh form. Hence, an attempt is made to extend its shelf life by using various postharvest treatments and storage them in cold storage. Various physiological and biochemical changes were recorded during the storage. Postharvest treatments really influenced the quality and shelf life of jamun fruits stored under cold conditions.

Biocontrol potential of epiphytic antagonistic bacteria to manage anthracnose disease and postharvest quality of papaya was evaluated. The papaya fruits were found highly susceptible to several fungal diseases. Among them anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides was the most prevalent. Epiphytic bacterium, Burkholderia cepacia was found to be the most efficacious biocontrol agent in this study. Chitosan (0.75%) and calcium chloride (3%) were used as enhancer of biocontrol efficacy of B. cepacia B23. Both of these chemicals have suppressive activity against C. gloeosporioides of papaya. The combination of B. cepacia B23 with chitosan-CaCl2 was more effective in controlling anthracnose than B. cepacia B23 alone or other treatments both in inoculated and naturally infected fruits. This combined treatment markedly slowed down the ripening process and delayed the changes in external colour, titratable acidity and pH without compromising fruit. Thus, the storage life of papaya was extended up to 15 days when compared with control. This study provided an alternative method for fungicides treatment of papaya at postharvest.

Influence of time and intensity of pruning cut rose (Rosa hybrida)

A research entitled “Influence of time and intensity of pruning on growth, flowering and postharvest performance of cut rose cv. Super Tata (Rosa hybrida)” was undertaken with the objective to determine the optimum time and intensity of rose pruning for efficient growth, yield and quality of cut flowers. The field work was carried out during July 2008 to April 2009 in rose farm of Chitwan, Nepal. Postharvest study was conducted at the central laboratory of IAAS, Nepal. Both time and intensity of pruning significantly affected growth, yield and postharvest performance. In Chitwan condition, cut rose growers can prune their rose plants after rainy season to produce cut rose targeting festivals and marriage months leaving 10-12 buds in each plant for quantity and quality of cut flower. From this study, it revealed that highest quality cut flowers can be produced by heavy pruning whereas more quantity can be achieved by light pruning. Sequential pruning can produce rose flowers at desired time.

The present study was undertaken during crop years 2004 and 2005 to assess the effect of different treatments and temperatures on the shelf life of Kinnows during storage. The objective of this study was to conduct postharvest management studies of Kinnows through the application of different wax treatments and storage temperatures to extend shelf life and to improve the postharvest quality of Kinnows for export marketing. The treated Kinnows were tested for different physicochemical and sensory parameters. The different parts of Kinnows were subjected to analyses in order to ascertain the presence of different pesticides and fungicides. The Kinnows were treated with two commercially available waxes, i.e., shellac based wax and polyethylene based wax and tested their efficacy during two crop years i.e., 2004 and 2005. The Kinnows were stored at four temperatures to determine the effect of different storage temperatures on life, physicochemical and sensory parameters. The different evaluations regarding the postharvest management were analysis of the Kinnows carried out after an interval of 15 days during the whole course of study up to 105 days storage.

The population of Penicillium spp. on fruit surface fluctuated along the different control points of the packing line, being the highest during “bin emptying”. In the first trial performed to control Penicillium decay of “Comune” Clementine, sodium carbonate, sodium and potassium bicarbonate, calcium chloride, and chitosan provided a significant reduction of rot as compared to water control. In the second trial conducted on “Hernandina” Clementine and “Valencia late” orange, substances were applied simulating practical commercial conditions by spray before harvest, dipping the fruit after harvest and the combination of the two treatments. In both varieties, preharvest application and the combination of preharvest and postharvest application were more effective than postharvest dipping alone; being sodium and potassium carbonate and bicarbonate the most effective salts in suppressing Penicillium rot. Partial sequencing of IGS regions of rDNA were obtained for P. digitatum and P. ulaiense.

Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L) is a dicotyledonous plant which is widely distributed globally. It contains 48-50% oil and 26-28 protein, and is a rich source of dietary fiber, minerals, and vitamins. Poverty reduction and sustained economic growth require, among others, efficient post-harvest and market system, which in turn require identification and improvement in the post-harvest handling and of marketing constraints. This further needs the analysis and understanding of both farm /household and market level constraints impeding the proper functioning of the post-harvest handling and marketing system of groundnut. With this regard, the increased production accompanied by appropriate post-harvest handling and market system of groundnut has a direct effect on farmers'' income level. This study was carried out in Babile district of east Hararghe zone of Oromia region of Ethiopia on smallholder groundnut farmers for the purpose of investigating the post-harvest handling practices and market condition of groundnut in Babile woreda and reducing the information gap on the subject . Hence, this study was taken up to fill this knowledge gap.

This study intended to investigate the effects of service quality, service features, and customer complaint handling on overall customer satisfaction in retail banking industry of Shiraz City. The conceptual framework presented in this study is employed to identify the contribution of service quality, service features, and customer complaint handling to overall customer satisfaction. The results of this study revealed that service quality and service features are significantly and positively associated with customer satisfaction while the third predictor variable of this study which is customer complaint handling has no significant association with customer satisfaction. Furthermore, findings from this study showed that the five dimensions of service quality are all significantly associated with customer satisfaction except for the responsiveness dimension. In other words, reliability, empathy, assurance, and tangibles are the most significant dimensions of service quality contributing to overall customer satisfaction respectively.

Sprouts are highly perishable in nature and get spoiled if not stored properly during distribution or in supermarket. Spoilage occurs more frequent when sprouts are not refrigerated. So a method to increase the shelf life of sprout would be advantageous to producers as well as to the consumers. The shelf-life was extended by designing a suitable modified atmospheric packaging system and created a favorable environment by the use of suitable polymeric film based on the design calculations. A mathematical model was also developed and validated. The technology was successful in extending the postharvest life of chickpea sprouts under modified atmosphere at 10 degree celcius. Considering that the proposed strategy is simple and relatively inexpensive, it could be very beneficial and of commercial importance to the sprout growers, processors and retailers

In recent years, many researchers have shown the importance of pre-storage heat stress for maintaining fruit freshness longer during storage at non- chilling temperatures. This technique has successfully been applied on a number of fruits and vegetables storage process. In the present research project, amanatsukan orange and mature green tomato (cvs. Momotaro and Carousel) were treated by a single heat stress [hot air (HA) or hot water (HW)] and a double heat stress (combination of HA+HW or HW+HA) before storage. The pre-storage heat treatment decreased the rate of water loss of the fruits during storage as compared to the untreated control. The combination of double heat stress had a substantial effect in delaying fruit color development. Therefore by making certain adjustments in time/temperature regimes, such treatments can facilitate postharvest handling and enable a longer period of storage before the fruit are put on display at a retailer.
