This handbook concerned with the ternary phase diagram (polymer (p)/solvent (s)/nonsolvent (ns))and the evaluations of membrane-forming system. According to the theory of phase separation three modes of phase separation can take place in such ternary system: nucleation and growth of the polymer lean phase, spinodal phase separation and nucleation and growth of the polymer rich phase. Since polymer is one of the components of the ternary system, solidification of a part of the system can take place.The ternary phase diagram systems has an importand role to report the agreement between experimental work to get the required membranes, and the ternary phase diagram miscibility gaps for the evaluations of a membrane-forming system. In this book a general introduction on membrane science and technology is given. It begins with the definition of terms and provides a description of membranes structures and membrane separation process. The advantages as well as the limitations of membrane process are indicated. A short overview over the developments of membranes science and technology is given.

A Study of the Application of Multiset to Membrane Computing

Simulating membrane computing in digital computers cannot be without the mathematical modelling of a membrane structure and its inherent inter- and intra-regional molecular interactions together with the rules governing such interactions. Before now there has not been a flexible representation of membrane structure. This thesis opens up a new dimension in the study of membrane computing by providing current synthesis of knowledge concerning the structure of membranes. The main aim of the thesis is to design a mathematical tool for representing a membrane structure, called a tree structure. It uses a suitable multiset permutation rather than a Venn diagram or a tree diagram for the representation in a one-to-one correspondence. Since a Venn diagram or a tree diagram representation of a membrane structure is not readily available to the computer at programming level, the use of tree structures can be exploited.

Liquid-Liquid Equilibria of Ternary Systems Using Solvent/Co-Solvent

Liquid-liquid equilibrium data of toluene or benzene+n-hexane or n-heptane or n-octane hydrocarbon systems are reported with many solvent mixtures at 298.15K.Complete phase digrams were obtained by evaluating the solubility and tie line results for each ternary mixture. The thermodynamic models :NRTL,UNIQUAC,and UIFAC models were used to correlate the experimental data and to predict the phase compositions of the ternary systems.The NRTL equation fitted the experimental data better than the UNIQUAC and UNIFAC equations:the average root mean square deviations (RMSD) was 0.165 for NRTL as compared to 0.491 for UNIQUAC and 1.304 for UNIFAC.

Investigation of the Al-Ge-Ni phase diagram

Nickel aluminides, like ?’-Ni3Al and ?-NiAl, are nowadays used in terms of nickel-base superalloys. Due to their excellent properties at high temperatures, they are applied in aircraft engines and power generating turbines, were materials are subjected to elevated temperatures and mechanical stresses. Since applied parts of nickel-base superalloys are moulded in complicated procedures at elevated temperatures, they are very expensive. A successful application of these materials thus requires suitable and cost-effective joining techniques, e.g. transient liquid phase bonding (TLP). As it is a brazing method, one has to determine a solder material which has a definitely lower melting point than the joining parts. In the present work, germanium has been chosen, as melting point depressing element, as it forms deep eutectics with Al and Ni. The aim of the present work was to investigate the ternary phase diagram Al-Ge-Ni, in order to optimize the filler composition and to better understand the interface reactions occurring during the brazing process.

Nowadays the majority of commercial alloys are multicomponent and multiphase systems. The understanding and prediction of microstructure formation in multicomponent alloys is complex, especially when multiphase reactions occur along the solidification path. Particularly, several efforts are directed towards controlling the amount, the morphology and the distribution of minority phases, formed in situ as particles or inclusions. Present research focuses on the investigation of the eutectic growth in ternary aluminium alloy. At certain solidification conditions the Al-Mn-Si ternary alloy exhibits a special type of univariant eutectic growth as separately nucleated AlMnSi- particles at the advancing Al-interface during directional growth. Repetitive pushing and engulfment of in situ generated intermetallic particles at the solid/liquid interface leads to the formation of a banded structure. This rather unusual eutectic type of univariant eutectic structure is explained by the symbiotic eutectic growth hypothesis.

Novel modifications on Polyethersulfone membranes

In this research, the integrally asymmetric polyethersulfone membrane were prepared using phase inversion technique.As an interesting result, the membrane exhibits rubbery PDMS behavior for H2S containing feeds and displays a glassy PES membrane for CO2/CH4 mixed gas. The effects of sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), cetyle three methyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), and Triton X-100 on structure and performance of polyethersulfone membranes for carbon dioxide separation from methane were investigated. The results indicate that addition of surfactants in the casting solution increases the membrane porosity and membrane gas permeance and decreases CO2/CH4 ideal selectivity, except for Triton X-100 which increases CO2/CH4 selectivity. Asymmetric gas separation membranes of polyethersulfone (PES) andpolyethersulfone/polyurethane (PU) were prepared with different blend compositions.

Recently, in the field of tissue engineering, fabrication of three dimensional (3D) electrospun membrane is much emphasized. 3D scaffold fabricated from multi-layered electrospun membrane possess both the benefits of nanofibrous and microfibrous scale morphology in one scaffold. In this book, layered composite scaffolds or membranes were fabricated using blend of Polycaprolactone (PCL) /Chitosan and PCL layer-by-layer using multilayer electrospinning techniique. Characterization of membranes were conducted using several techniques. Using optimized solution concentration and processing parameters, the composite PCL/Chitosan and PCL layer-by-layer membrane were successfully fabricated. From the scanning electron micrographs, it was observed that the composite electrospun membranes produced microfibers and nanofibers morphology within single scaffold. In another part of this book, PCL was blended with Chitosan using a common solvent formic acid and acetic acid. The ratio of concentration of the polymers was varied in order to form different level of viscosity of polymeric solutions. Then the PCL/Chitosan nanofibers were fabricated via electrospinning technique.

The study was aimed to develop solid self micro emulsifying drug delivery system (S-SEDDS) for dissolution enhancement of model drug Glibenclamide using Aerosil 200 as solid carrier. SEDDS was prepared using oil, surfactant and cosurfactant respectively. Pseudo ternary phase diagram was used to identify micro emulsion region for formulating stable SEEDS .Prepared SEDDS was evaluated for turbidity measurement, globule size and zeta potential, viscosity determination and % transmittance. S-SEDDS was prepared by adsorption technique using Aerosil 200 as solid carrier. Prepared S-SEDDS was evaluated for flow properties, drug content, FTIR, SEM, DSC and in-vitro dissolution study. Results showed that prepared liquid SEDDS passed all evaluation tests. S-SEDDS showed good flow property and drug content. From the experiment, it is clear that even after conversion of the liquid SEDDS into the solid SEEDS, their is no significant alteration in its propertites.Thus Solid SEEDS can be used as a means of dissolution enhancement technique.

Ternary wavelets based on an interpolating 4-point ternary stationary subdivision scheme for compressing fractal-like signals are introduced. In this dissertation, error bounds between binary/ternary subdivision curves/surfaces and their control polygons after k-fold subdivision in terms of the maximal differences of the initial control point sequences and constants that depend on the subdivision mask is estimated. The bound is independent of the process of subdivision and can be evaluated without recursive subdivision. Our technique is independent of parameterizations therefore it can be easily and efficiently implemented.

Fluorescent dyes are of great importance for investigation of biological processes. In 2007 the first ratiometric fluorescent probe for apoptosis detection (F2N12S) has been reported. This book is focused on a development of the improved analogs of F2N12S. Firstly, the systematic studies of F2N12S in model membranes and cells are described for better understanding of its mechanism of response to apoptosis. Secondly, synthesis of new membrane probes is presented. All the molecules are classified into three types according to their sensitivity profiles (sensitive both to the surface charge and to the phase state, only to the surface charge and only to the phase state of lipid membranes). Nile Red derivative NR12S is introduced as a molecular sensor for apoptosis and cholesterol content in cell membrane. Also, the general principle for the design of fluorescent membrane probe is proposed. Finally, two new classes of environment-sensitive fluorophores are presented (on the base of fluorene and chromone units). This book should be interesting for those who are working in the field of biological membranes and on the development of new molecular tools for fluorescence imaging.

Therefore, the use of acute phase proteins in the diagnosis of clinical and subclinical mastitis and their application in the monitoring of treatment is considered as one of the most interesting applications of these proteins. Although a wide range of studies have been carried out to determine the role of acute phase proteins in the inflammatory diseases of the mammary gland, there is still necessity for the evaluation of their usefulness in these pathological conditions. Therefore, the acute phase response and clinical application of acute phase proteins in clinical and sub-clinical mastitis of dairy cows are discussed and evaluated in this work.

The nitridation of RBAN samples proceed by both solid-gas and liquid-gas reactions depend on the morphology and average particle size of Al starting powder. The reaction rate was found been increased by decreasing average particle size of the Al and by choosing the flake-like morphology. The temperature at which nitriding reaction occurs depends on the Al average particle size and morphology. The compared respective results show a major influence of the AlN/Al ratio. It seemed that the optimum AlN/Al weight ratio should be 75/25 wt%. Due to the smaller particle size and morphology of the flake –like morphology of Al starting powder as compared to equi-axed one, however the nucleation period in flake-like morphology Al maybe shorter. The change in the microstructural parameters resulting from the Al powder particle size distribution and morphology also affects the mechanical properties of RBAN samples. Fracture strength increases with decreasing porosity, pore size and by using the flake-like morphology. In order to make high strength materials it is desirable to have a homogeneous microstructure with a narrow pore size distribution and small pores.
